What Your Feet Could Be Telling You About Your Health

We rely on our feet every single day, yet they're often one of the last parts of our body we pay attention to. The truth is, your feet can provide valuable clues about your overall health, and recognising changes early could help prevent more serious problems.
Here are seven signs your feet shouldn't ignore.

1. Pain That Doesn't Go Away
A little soreness after a long walk or busy day is perfectly normal. However, pain that lingers for days or keeps returning isn't something to brush aside.
Persistent heel pain, aching arches or discomfort across the ball of the foot may be linked to conditions such as plantar fasciitis, arthritis, tendon injuries or other musculoskeletal issues. If pain is affecting your daily activities, it's worth having it assessed rather than hoping it disappears on its own.
2. Swollen Feet or Ankles
Swelling after standing for long periods can happen, especially in warm weather. But swelling that appears suddenly, affects only one foot or doesn't improve with rest deserves attention.
Ongoing swelling can sometimes be associated with circulation problems, injury, inflammation, or other underlying health conditions.
3. Tingling, Burning or Numbness
Pins and needles every now and then isn't unusual. Persistent numbness, burning sensations, or tingling, however, may indicate nerve irritation or damage.
These symptoms are particularly important for people living with diabetes, as reduced sensation can make it easier for injuries to go unnoticed.
4. Skin That Changes Colour or Temperature
Healthy feet should generally look and feel similar to the rest of your body.
Feet that become unusually pale, blue, red, or feel noticeably colder or hotter than normal may indicate changes in circulation or inflammation. If these changes appear suddenly or persist, seek professional advice.
5. Cuts or Blisters That Won't Heal
Small cuts and blisters should gradually improve with good care. If a wound isn't healing, becomes increasingly painful, or shows signs of infection, don't delay getting it checked.
This is especially important for anyone with diabetes or circulation problems, where slow healing can increase the risk of complications.
6. Changes to Your Toenails
Thickened, brittle, discoloured, or painful toenails aren't always just cosmetic concerns.
Nail changes may be caused by fungal infections, repeated trauma, ingrown toenails, or, in some cases, other health conditions. Early treatment is usually simpler and more effective than waiting until the problem worsens.
7. New Lumps or Bumps
Not every lump is serious, but any new growth that's painful, changing in size, or affecting the way you walk should be assessed.
What appears to be a simple corn or bunion could require professional treatment, particularly if it's causing ongoing discomfort.
Don't Ignore the Early Signs
Your feet are excellent indicators of your overall wellbeing. Paying attention to changes and seeking advice when something doesn't feel right can often prevent minor problems from becoming major ones.
